Exactly. If Ayew had been on that pitch instead of Zaza, Sunderland would have got a pasting.

I don't think we struggled to open them up. We could and should have been 3 or 4 up at half time.

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Sunderland - The Official Match Thread FT 1-0
Obiang MOTM by a country mile, Fernandes good but obviously not being a LB was always cutting inside, Reid is back to something like his best now and Noble put in a shift.

We continue to struggle to open teams up that are all now content to sit deep with 9 or 10 behind the ball. We are less vulnerable to the counter now with the 3 at the back and Obiang as the DM but today had little or no cutting edge.

Antonio, Ferghouli, Lanzini and even Payet all struggled with the final ball and we looked a tad lightweight in midfield aside from Obiang.

Zaza tried hard and ran his nuts off but the one chance where he was clean through he fluffed his lines and control of the football and could not even get a shot on goal. He is not a forward that can playup top on his own and needs to be shipped back to Italy I think.

Ferghouli, Calleri, Fletcher, Nordveidt, Tore and Zaza have not improved the quality of teh first team. Fletcher has some time arguably and needs more opportunities but I am not seeing a Rashford in the making. Need a better striker and Cresswell back but Fernandes looks like he is making a case for inclusion in the midfield.

In summary, we made hard work of it and should have been 1 or 2 up first half but lacked the finishing. However, we got the 3 points and that was a nice way to end the game :-)

I'm amazed that our top scorer, with more than twice the goals of anyone else, when he isn't even being played front (very often), is getting so much flak after one poor game.

And he wasn't that poor, nor was he the poorest player on our side.

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Sunderland - The Official Match Thread FT 1-0
It's pretty simple: add Ayew and Cresswell to this side and goals will come. Ayew may not be an out and out striker but he is excellent in front of goal. I reckon he'll have a field day for us, with the likes of Dimi and Lanzini supplying the bullets.

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Sunderland - The Official Match Thread FT 1-0
I appreciate the desperation to get Zaza functioning, but it's also hampering the progress of Fletcher who I think more than deserves to be picked right now. I feel that Fletcher came into the season really hitting the floor running in good form, and that momentum has been utterly squandered. An opportunity massively missed imo.

I also think that while I campaigned for Kouyate as centre-back since he first played there for us (and he is clearly currently our best defender imo) what we massively miss is his lungbusting runs into the box from midfield. We simply have nobody else to do that right now.

It's so obvious that we have too many creators and not enough runners. Feghouli I think looks really talented, but this season is just completely wrong for the mix with Payet and Lanzini already first-choice creators. Once Antonio went off we were literally static in midfield - talented creative players sitting comfortably on the ball with no runners to aim for!!! A fit Ayew would make a massive difference to the current mix I think.

Biggest Mysteries...

Why only 1 up front against bottom team who obviously came to park the bus...?

Why Bilic waited so long to bring on fresh striker...?

Why Calleri ahead of Fletcher...?

Why is Bilic so thick headed in poor team selections...?

Why so many passes back and sideways from Midfield when we gain possession...?

Why is MF so slow..(Noble)...?

6 very tough games ahead...we will be in bottom 5 or lower...

Sort it out Bilic...!!!

Stating the obvious, but our foward situation has beome a real bone of contention for us now, as said they are either injured or not worth a wank. Do we go into the market in Jan? Unlikely. Will it be sorted next summer? Dunno.

First game I have seen for a bit after just getting back in the country.

Looked more solid certainly than the beginning of the season.

Good to see Obiang doing decent and getting games.

Bit of bad luck with the finishing but still have to be better especially against such opposition. Can not really comment on Zaza other than I know he has not scored but seems lively as I saw him in Serie A, last couple years. But again somebody needs to score and he in that game at least just was not making the right runs.

Ayew or Carroll the answer there? Both have scored some goals when and if they are on the pitch.

It was kouyate who was off and he wasn't interfering

I'm pretty sure they changed the rules either last year or the year before that says if you're in an offside position like Fletcher was you're interfering with play.

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Sunderland - The Official Match Thread FT 1-0
Calieri was the player who was in front of the keeper, and he was definitely onside.

Fletcher was in an offside position but was not interfering with play. Therefore the goal was valid and not really controversal at all.

Hopefully we can start playing well for more than 30 minutes a game now. We've had 6 points out of the last 6 and 2 clean sheets in a row so now we should be able to start playing with a bit more confidence and freedom.

I find that a high percentage of our shots on target go in.

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Sunderland - The Official Match Thread FT 1-0
The dicision was marginal and open to interpretation by the ref. No big controversy here as it was not a definite offside.

Couldn't give a shit anyway. We must have had around a dozen proven terrible decisions against us costing us points, places and players since last March and this must be the first (slightly) controversial decision that has gone for us

Cresswell should have been playing yesterday too had he he not been twice incorrectly booked which prob would have made a lot of difference to our performance.

FUCK Moyes the miserable overated jock cunt.

It is actually a brilliant goal
Payets pass is abysmal, behind Reid from 5yds and he does superbly to touch it on to his left and hits it perfectly

Sven Roeder 12:46 Sun Oct 23
Re: ⚽ West Ham v Sunderland - The Official Match Thread FT 1-0
The ball went under Calleri's foot and he was being played onside by Rodwell
Fletcher might have been slightly offside but he was 3yds to the right and in no way distracting the keeper
Fair goal , rightly given

Not for the first time I am embarrassed by the so-called "validity" of a goal awarded where a number of players (ours) obstruct the keepers position. This happens time and time again. I find myself wondering how many goals Jimmy Greaves might have collected if this slovenly rule change had been around in his day.
